Find aĀ Skill You Already Have and Turn It Into Something People Can Buy

with Skill to Offer

A course from Heath Close,
Founder of The Self-Employment Societyā„¢

If you want to make your day job optional, the first thing you need is something to sell.

This course helps you:

  • Uncover a skill
  • Turn that skill into a product
  • Wrap that product in a compelling offer
  • Create a simple 1-page offer doc you can point buyers to

Without the years most people lose staying in the same job figuring out what to sell.

Wanting out of your day job is the easy part.
Knowing what to sell is the hard part.

So nothing gets built.
And the day job keeps taking.

You don't need to learn a new skill.

Use one you already have. Most people are sitting on more than one.

Sell a result.

Even a physical product isn't the thing they're really buying. They want the result. Your skill is what gets them there.

A product isn't an offer.

The product is what they get. The offer is what makes them want it.

A skill, a product, and an offer are three different things. That took me years to figure out.

Once you can see them separately, they're three small decisions instead of one big question that stops people from taking action.

Hi.Ā I'm Heath Close.

I grew up in a small town of 700. I always knew I wanted to do something creative for a living. I just couldn't figure out how to make it pay.

So I did what everyone does. I took a job.

I sold knives. Worked as a mechanic. Did landscaping. Worked in a factory warehouse. Drove a truck. Drove a school bus. On and on and on.

The pattern was the same every time. I was miserable and unfulfilled, so I'd spend every spare moment thinking about how to start my own thing.

I made a course teaching musicians how to build a free online presence. It failed. I ran a recording studio out of my home. It failed. I started a freelance game business. Blogs for musicians. A cigar review site. There were others. They all fell apart.

So I figured I was missing something. I needed to learn business at a bigger scale, and I needed a way to fund the education.

I went back to trucking on purpose. I moved out of my apartment, sold my car, threw everything into storage, and lived in the truck, cutting my expenses to almost nothing to fund building a video game. Living on the road, I built that game from the sleeper of my truck after 10-14 hour days, with the sole mission of making an artifact that would break me into the video game industry. The goal was a mobile game Apple would feature.

So I designed the game and ran a small team to build it. Then COVID hit and the money ran out. I taught myself to code, finished it myself, and Apple featured it. Mission accomplished.

That's what got me into the video game industry. Bigger business, bigger budgets, bigger teams (and business at that scale showed me a lot of what not to do as well).

Looking back now, one thing stands out.

I always had skills, even when that wasn't clear to me. What I never had was a good way to focus one of them properly. I didn't have an understanding of what makes a good product, or that a product isn't the same thing as an offer. The things I built were always too broad to help one person with one problem.

Every time I tried, I learned more about what works and what doesn't, until finally, I put it all together.

Now I teach people what took me years to figure out, so they don't have to learn it the way I did.

That's what I put into this course.

Five expert, focused lessons, built from the years it took me to work this out, that find the skill you already have and turn it into an offer, in the order that actually works.

You watch a lesson, then you do that step in your Skill to Offer Build Sheet. By the end you've got the first real piece of your way out. Not a plan for someday. The actual thing you sell, ready to put in front of someone.

(And no, you don't need a website, an audience, or anyone's permission to start.)

There's too much advice out there.

Ask AIĀ or watch YouTube, and you'll drown in it. Most of it is... fine. Almost none of it is aimed at where you're actually standing.

That's the real cost of doing this alone. There's no way to tell what matters right now from what matters eventually.

This course is the filter.

Five lessons, one step each, covering only what you need to uncover a skill and turn it into something someone can buy.

No audience building.
No funnels.
No branding exercises.Ā

You watch the lesson, you do the step in yourĀ Skill to Offer Build Sheet, and you move on. Nothing in here is there to pad the runtime.

By the end, you'll have a skill, a product, an offer, and the offer doc that sells it.

Lesson 1: Find Your Skill
You don't have to learn anything new. You already have the skill. The work here is finding it.

  • The six places to look, including the one almost nobody thinks to check
  • The three questions that turn a list of maybes into one decision
  • How to tell a real need from a nice idea

Ā

Lesson 2: Turn It Into a Product
A skill isn't a product. This is where it becomes one.

  • Why people really buy, and what that means for what you're selling
  • What's actually changing hands in every purchase, from a T-shirt to a $20,000 coaching package
  • The real reason a product works, and how to build yours around it

Lesson 3: Say It in One Sentence

The whole thing, short enough to say to someone at a barbecue.

  • The sentence that answers "so what do you do?" in a way that could spark a sale
  • The three places to look when you have no idea what to charge
  • The five pieces your sentence needs, and the order they go in

Lesson 4: Make the Offer Compelling

A product gives you something to sell. An offer is what makes people want it.

  • The five ingredients of a compelling offer
  • The thing that makes a stranger comfortable saying yes when you've got no track record
  • The two things that get someone off the fence and acting on your offer

Lesson 5: Create Your Offer Doc

Where you point people so they can buy.

  • Why you don't need a website, and what to use instead
  • What actually goes on the page
  • The order that converts
  • The one part that helps you get clear on how you actually deliver your product

The Skill to Offer Build Sheet

Every lesson has a section waiting for you. You find your skill, turn it into a product, write the offer, and build the offer doc. Every step gets done, so it's not just education. It's implementation.

Five lessons.
One afternoon.

You can have something people can buy before the day's out.

This is for you if:

  • You want more out of a week than counting down to Friday
  • You want to find the thing you're meant to be doing, even if you couldn't name it yet
  • You'd rather start with an idea that works now than wait for the million dollar one
  • You want the exact steps to find your skill and turn it into something people can buy

This is not for you if:

  • You love your job and couldn't be happier
  • You're fine letting your boss and your company steer your career
  • You'd rather your income depend on someone else's decisions than your own
  • You believe a paycheck is the only way to get paid
"I don't have a skill I could sell."

You almost certainly do, and probably more than one. People rarely look in the right places first, which is why the first lesson gives you six places to look and three questions to pick the winner.

"I just don't have the time."

This isn't a course you commit weeks to. Five lessons, done in an afternoon. Each one is short enough to get through on a break. Every one is packed with what you need and nothing you don't.

"I can't afford to quit."

Good. You're not supposed to. You build while the paycheck and the benefits keep coming. The job becomes optional when what you've built can support you.

"Will this actually work for me?"

Whatever you sell, from coaching to tax prep to t-shirts, the path from a skill to an offer is the same.

Waiting costs something. I know because I've paid it.

Years of Sundays where I dreaded going back to work on Monday, because the weekend was never long enough to heal from the week.

Years of trying to spend my off time with people I love and not really being there, because part of me was somewhere else, trying to figure out how to get out of my day job.

But nothing changes if nothing changes.
So here's the choice.

You can close this page and keep building someone else's dream, or you can spend one afternoon to start building your own, and come out the other side with a skill, a product, an offer you can point people to.

This course is the map I wish someone had handed me when I was trying to figure out what to sell to escape the prison of employment.

Discover your skill, follow the steps, and start.

I'll see you inside.
